Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, has renamed Academic City Road in Dubai to Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Road in honour of the grandson of the country's Founding Father Sheikh Zayed.

The 27-year-old serviceman returned to the UAE on Saturday following a helicopter crash in Yemen last August. Four died in the crash and two were injured.

Sheikh Zayed was serving in the Presidential Guard when the helicopter crashed due to a technical failure during a "regular mission" on August 11, 2017. The UAE has been fighting an extended campaign in the Shabwa governorate against Al Qaida since that time. That month, the UAE-trained Shabwa Elite Force drove Al Qaida-Arabian Peninsula out of the governorate’s capital, Ataq.

The fighting against AQAP has continued in the Al Sayed area, where it uses caves and mountains for storing arms and training. On January 30, at least 11 people were killed by a suicide car bomb attack at a checkpoint backed by the UAE, Reuters reported.

When it was announced that Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan would return to the UAE this week, skyscrapers in Abu Dhabi and Dubai beamed the image of the sheikh dressed in military fatigues. He was met by leaders at Al Bahr Palace in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

The eight-lane motorway named is 50km long and runs from Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road to the Oman Street intersection. It passes Dubai Silicon Oasis, Arabian Ranches and the Expo 2020 site. The first half of the road is open and the second half will open in March.

Numerous roads and mosques in the UAE have been renamed after servicemen who have died in Yemen.
