Dubai prison escapee loses appeal against three-year prison sentence
The man was one of four who escaped from prison on July 7 last year
One of four men who tried to escape from prison has lost his appeal against a three-year jail sentence.
According to court records, shortly after midnight on July 7 last year, the three Iranians and Iraqi, aged between 21 and 52, escaped from their cell through a hole they dug. They then scaled the wall using a ladder they made from pipes taken from an air conditioning unit and clothes.
They sneaked through the health services unit and used a copy of an emergency exit key to leave the building before climbing over the prison’s outer wall using the make-shift ladder, the court heard.
Prison guards noticed the men were missing two hours later and notified police who arrested them in the desert the next day.
"I immediately conducted a check of the cells then found the hole in their cell," said an Emirati police lieutenant, 33.
All four were sentenced to three years in jail each followed by deportation.
The Iraqi defendant appealed his sentence but will have to serve his term.
