A man who strangled a woman then stole her mobile phone and purse was arrested within 24 hours of the crime, Dubai police revealed on Thursday.

Maj Gen Khalil Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Criminal Investigation, said police were called to a flat in Al Baraha where they found the woman – of African origin – dead in the toilet.

Preliminary investigations showed that the woman was visiting the country and she and a 32-year-old Asian man living in Dubai argued over money before he killed her.

The man was traced and arrested less than a day after the woman was killed.

During police questioning, the suspect said he had accompanied the woman to the flat but the two began fighting about money. He said he strangled the woman then stole her purse and mobile phone before fleeing the apartment.

The case has been referred to prosecutors for legal action.
