DUBAI // More than 60 public complaints about Dubai Police of about 500 received last year were found to be legitimate, police figures released yesterday revealed.
About 60 per cent of the complaints were filed against general directorates at police headquarters while the remaining third were against individual police stations, said Col Mohammed Al Mur, the director general of the new Human Rights Department.
Police did not specify the exact nature of the complaints or the action taken.
The figures show a small increase in the number of complaints from 2010 when 469 were recorded, of which 73 were found to be genuine.
And 20 of 119 internal grievances raised last year by the police force, servicemen and civilian staff were found to be genuine.
Objections regarding disciplinary action topped the list with 56 grievances recorded, while the rest addressed the work environment and annual appraisals.
The year before, internal grievances totalled 108, of which 21 were found to be legitimate.
All complaints from this year onwards will be reviewed by the revived Human Rights Department, which has a 300-strong staff.
Police have promised to respond to complaints within five days and officers found negligent will face disciplinary action.
Established in 1995, the department was a first for the UAE.
