Dubai Police focus on illegals

Number of people in the country without a valid visa had doubled in the last year.

DUBAI // Dubai Police will set up a new division to combat illegal immigrants, whose numbers they said almost doubled in a year. The new unit will be part of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and will be responsible for stopping the flow of those who enter the country illegally, said Brig Khalil al Mansouri, the head of the CID He said illegals "pose a threat to our society", adding that "this division will have the target to eliminate this problem, to close any holes in the city's security system".

The division is expected to start operating in few days. Almost 55,000 illegals were arrested in Dubai in 2009 compared with more than 30,000 in 2008, according to police statistics. @Email:wissa@thenational.ae
