Dubai Police chief keeps options open in manhunt
DUBAI //Police are searching for four men who escaped from Al Muraqqabat Police station on Saturday and have not ruled out collaboration in the escape.
Lt Gen Dahi Khalfan Tamim, the Dubai Police chief, said the possibility of collaboration was still under scrutiny. "We are currently investigating how the suspects managed to escape and we are looking at all possibilities, including negligence."
However, Brig Khalil al Mansouri, who heads the Dubai Police Criminal Investigation Department, said: "We have received information that the suspects are hiding in one of the emirates and we are co-ordinating with police in that emirate on the case. We are carrying out investigations but we are ruling out that there is collaboration between the policemen and the suspects."
A police source said the four men were from Iran. Several investigation teams are looking into the case. Dubai Police are questioning the police officers responsible for monitoring the four men.
The four managed to get away from a policeman who was escorting them to make phone calls, and made their way to freedom by scaling a wall, authorities said. Police were also looking into how the men managed to get out of the detention centre, said Lt Gen Tamim.
Two of the four were detained in connection with a robbery of a shop, the third was being held on suspicion of drug use and the fourth on suspicion of theft, said Brig al Mansouri. "The suspects had been taken to the phone box … to make calls to their family members and managed to get away from the policeman and climb the wall."
