DUBAI // A divorced woman and a married man have been sentenced to a year in prison after a pornographic video of them was circulated on the internet.

Police received a tip-off about the 30-minute video, after which they approached the male Emirati defendant N A at his workplace and took him into custody on January 17.

Fellow Emirati A A was contacted by police and told to attend Rashidiya police station, where she and N A, who are both in their 30s, were detained.

Short clips between three minutes and six minutes long were taken from the video and distributed on social media sites.

The woman, who had been divorced from her husband and father of her two children for nearly two years, confessed to making the video but claimed that it was from 10 years ago. She denied making the film intentionally for distribution and said that she had made more videos of the same nature with N A during their relationship.

Both denied at Dubai Court of Misdemeanours having consensual sex outside wedlock. A third unidentified defendant was charged with circulating pornographic material on the internet.

The couple have appealed against the verdict.
