Dubai Municipality has called on people to continue donating used computer equipment after revealing tens of thousands of PCs and other items eventually make their way back into the community.

Of the some 120,000 items acquired by the PC Refurbishment Centre over the last five years - including laptops and scanners - 70,000 were sent to a variety of schools and charities.

Aside from the environmental benefits of re-using the equipment, donations can help to increase IT literacy, said Qasim Mohammed Rafi, the head of the centre.

"The centre helps to enhance opportunities ... by providing educational, social and charitable institutions with necessary technical resources, computers and IT products."
