Dubai Marina ATM dishes out thousands of extra dirhams

Dh500 notes were placed where Dh200 should be inside ATM.

An ATM at Dubai Marina dished out thousands of extra dirhams to customers due to a "human error".

The Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank ATM in the Carrefour outlet of the Marina Crown building was issuing Dh500 notes instead of Dh200 on Wednesday night.

When word got out, "people flocked to the machine to get as much money as they could", said a customer, who claimed he came away with an extra Dh10,000.

"It was insane, people were making so much money."

The customer, who did not wish to be identified, said one person pulled out as much as Dh20,000, while others were taking between Dh5,000 and Dh10,000.

An employee at Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank said the people that filled the ATM mistakenly put the Dh500 notes in the wrong place.

"Instead of Dh200s in the tray there were Dh500s," he said.

He said the issue has now been solved and that it would "not affect the bank's customers".

The bank employee said he did not know how much extra money had been taken, but the loss would be covered by the bank's insurance.
