A fire in Dubai's Jebel Ali sent smoke billowing across the south-west of the city on Friday morning.

The blaze in a plastics recycling plant in the port area took hold of much of the building, according to images from the scene.

Witnesses reported seeing plumes of smoke rising from the area starting at around 9am. They said that some of the gates to the free zone were closed as a precaution.

The building is located behind the United Motors and General Electric offices.

Dubai Civil Defence said the emergency call came in at 9am and that the first of three crews were at the scene in about 10 minutes, radio station ARN reported.

By early afternoon smoke could be seen by motorists on Sheikh Zayed Road up to 20km south of Dubai.

At 14:30, Dubai Police said the fire was under full control and no casualties were reported.

The Jebel Ali industrial area to the north of Sheikh Zayed Road is dominated by the city's power plant, the aluminium works and the port free zone.
