Dubai Customs nears its target for employing Emirati staff

More than 2,000 job applications are received from Emiratis during Careers UAE 2009, a three-day careers fair held earlier this month.

DUBAI // Dubai Customs received more than 2,000 job applications from Emiratis during Careers UAE 2009, a three-day careers fair earlier this month. Currently, 76 per cent of customs staff are Emirati and the department is aiming for 80 per cent by the end of the year, according to a senior customs official. "We have also received applications from high school students, baccalaureate and technical graduates as well as masters degree holders which are to be treated as per customs needs," said Feryal Tawakul, human resources director for Dubai Customs.

She said customs had also recruited many applicants who applied during previous career fairs. She said customs was providing training to help Emiratis improve their skills and be committed to a good work ethic to help economic development in Dubai and the UAE. Dalal Ibrahim, who recently landed a job with customs, said she was pleased with her new job, which will allow her to continue her studies at the same time.

"I would love to help my society by working in a government organisation, such as customs," Mrs Ibrahim said. shafez@thenational.ae
