DUBAI // A man was recorded threatening his wife and mother-in-law with gang rape unless charges made against him were dropped, a court heard yesterday.

The Dubai Criminal Court was told that Pakistani M F, 34, threatened his 24-year-old wife, E A, and her mother, also Pakistanis.

E A had reported her husband to police earlier this year, but court records did not reveal why. On May 8 while M F was being investigated, he called his wife twice and threatened her, not knowing that the call was being recorded.

“He tried many times to convince me to drop charges but when I didn’t he threatened me and my mother,” said E A in records.

Prosecutors said M F only confessed when he listened to the recordings. He also told prosecutors that he was desperate when he made the threats because he was detained, jobless and in need of money.

In court, however, he denied a charge of issuing threats to kill. “I was in detention when she claims this happened,” said M F.

He was found guilty and sentenced to three months in prison. He will be deported after completing his jail term.
