The Metro station at Dubai International Airport Terminal 1 was shut briefly today after an air conditioning unit malfunctioned, giving off a electrical-burning smell.

The problem was not serious, said Dubai Airports spokeswoman Lorne Riley.

The wires in the unit had begun to melt, police and fire investigators found, so the unit was decommissioned.

In the meantime, trains skipped the station and the escalator and overpass leading to it were roped off, said Angelo Marababol, a car-rental employee working in the terminal.

Authorities took the precaution after the burning smell was reported.
