Police responding to complaints of a drunk partygoer were insulted and spat on, Dubai Criminal Court has heard.

Officers described being verbally abused by the 28-year-old Moroccan defendant at a hotel in Hor Al Anz in the early hours of January 4.

“We arrived to find the man causing a mess inside the hotel and disturbing employees,” said one policeman.

“I tried to calm him down but he attacked me. Every time we tried to handcuff him he resisted and spat at us.”

The court heard how the man was eventually subdued and taken into custody at Al Muraqqabat police station. He was charged with physical assault and insulting the officers.

“All I remember is that I woke up to find myself in a police station,” he told the court. "I don’t know what I did.”

A verdict is expected on April 21.
