A Moldavian man has been sentenced to a year in jail and ordered to pay Dh200,000 in blood money to the family of a 23-year-old passenger who died in a drink-driving accident on Cairo Street in Dubai last March.
The Dubai Traffic Court also gave the driver a Dh20,000 fine and suspended his licence for a year. The Dubai chief traffic prosecutor Salah Bu Faroosha said: "Since January we have had 55 deadly traffic incidents until the end of May."
He said he believed tougher punishments were helping to deter residents from engaging in reckless driving in the emirate.
