Drug rehab centre sees increase in addicts seeking treatment

16 addicts were referred to rehabilitation centre in first six months of this year.

AJMAN// Almost as many drug addicts have been referred to a rehabilitation centre in Ajman in the past six months than in the past two years combined, officials have told.

Police referred 16 addicts from January to June this year; eight entered the centre in 2010 and 11 in 2011.

"The figures show the willingness of drug addicts to come and seek help and the success of the police's awareness campaigns," said Col Saeed Humaid Nasser, the director of the Anti Narcotic Department.

He was speaking yesterday to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse at Ajman Police. Officers also used the occasion to launch an awareness campaign and exhibition highlighting the dangers of drugs.

Col Nasser expressed his dismay at an increase in the number of drug cases, especially those involving youngsters. "Fighting this crime requires the collective collaboration of police, parents and community members," he said.

He said police handled 93 drug cases and arrested 156 suspects in 2011, up from 44 cases handled with 44 suspects arrested in 2010. In the first six months of this year 55 cases have been handled and 84 suspects arrested.

A total of 77,648 drug tablets were seized last year, while 52,322 were seized in the first six months of this year.
