DUBAI // Two truck drivers denied offering a Dubai customs guard Dh1,000 bribe to avoid paying six months of parking fees, a Dubai court heard this morning.

The men, AM, 22 and KQ, 24, both Syrians, are accused of trying to bribe the security guard at Gate No 1 in Al Aweer dry dock on November 3, 2010, the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance heard.

WR, the security guard, told prosecutors that on the day of the incident, he was praying at the mosque when AM and KQ came to him.

He said they told him their truck had been parked for six months and they wanted to take it out without paying the associated fees. He said they promised to give him money if he helped them.

WR said he promised them he would, but informed his superior, who contacted the police.

Police told WR to tell the Syrians he would help them in return for Dh1,000, records said.

Both men were arrested when they met WR and gave him Dh600. Police then arrested them, records show.

A verdict is expected on March 28.
