The driver of a cement mixer ran over four people, killing one, when he strayed onto the hard shoulder, Dubai Police said on Sunday.

Officers said the man fled the scene before later being arrested.

The incident happened on Mohammed bin Zayed Road in Dubai on Friday.

The three men that survived were seriously injured.

They were walking down the outside lane when the incident happened at 9.45pm, said Brigadier Yousef Al Adidi, head of Al Qusais Police Station.

“The man was arrested an hour after he committed the felony. We located him at his home in Sharjah,” the officer said.

“He confessed to his crime and said that he fled the scene because he feared he would lose his job."

Assistant police chief Major General Khalil Al Mansouri said the driver "will be facing criminal charges.”

He urged motorists to be cautious at all times, particularly at night.
