Donor's gift to cupcake daughter

Man offers Dh4,000 to pay for angiogram for mother of UAE-based Filipina.

DUBAI // A donor has come forward after reading of Kim Domingo-Valdez's efforts to raise money for her mother's life-saving medical treatments in the Philippines by selling cupcakes.

The man offered to pay the Dh4,000 cost of an angiogram at the Philippine Heart Centre in Quezon City, just one of the procedures the 29-year-old Filipina IT specialist's mother needs.

"I didn't expect anyone to come forward and pay for the angiogram," she said. "I'm thinking of baking him a cake to thank him."

Her mother, Evangeline Domingo, 57, had two heart attacks earlier this year and still needs a heart bypass - at a cost of more than 400,000 Philippine pesos (Dh34,000) - to remove the blockage in her arteries and reduce the risk of another heart attack. Mrs Domingo was waiting for the results of a "readiness" check-up yesterday to see if she could handle the angiogram. They are due by the end of the week.

Last Friday, Mrs Domingo-Valdez and her husband sold cupcakes and muffins at a mini-bazaar at Al Shabab Sports Club as part of Philippine Independence celebrations. Their efforts have so far raised Dh4,300, which includes Dh1,500 from the bake sale and donations from friends and colleagues.

Mrs Domingo-Valdez is taking cupcake orders through her Facebook account or by e-mail: kimberlindomingo@yahoo.com.
