ABU DHABI // Every year in the build up to Eid Al Fitr doctors at Burjeel Hospital have to treat children who have been badly burned after playing with illegal fireworks.

Dr Ahmed Bahaa, emergency physician at the hospital, said about three youngsters are brought in with firework-related injuries.

"Using fireworks is dangerous for all people, particularly if you use illegal ones. You have to take precautions," said Dr Bahaa.

One particularly serious case was a child of about 11 years old severely injured after playing with fireworks.

"We took him into the operating theatre and an ophthalmologist tried to get the foreign body out. But the boy ended up losing the eye.It can happen to anybody."

Dr Bahaa urged adults not to let children use fireworks.
