Nearly Dh8 million of counterfeit goods have been seized in a raid by Dubai Police.

The huge haul of more than 300,000 fake hygiene products - including bottles of toothpaste and shampoo - were being stashed in a warehouse by a market owner in Deira.

“An Asian man has been arrested for selling Dh7.825 million of fake products, including shampoo and toothpaste. The suspect used a warehouse, located in a nearby emirate, to store the fakes. A total of 322,248 hygiene related bottles were recovered during a raid on the warehouse,” said Brig Salem Al Rumaithi, director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation.

Brig Al Rumaithi said the suspect claimed he was shipping the products to other countries.

Police also arrested a second man who entered the UAE on a visit visa in a bid to sell Dh300,000 worth of counterfeit gold.

“The suspect, from an Asian country, was planning to sell the gold. As he was trying to sell 1.5kg of gold for half of its price, many suspected him,” said Col Omar bin Hammad, deputy director of the anti-economic crim department at Dubai Police.

Col bin Hammad said: “The suspect sprayed metal portions with gold. The metal portions were covered with a light layer of gold.”

Both suspects have been referred to Dubai Public Prosecution.
