DUBAI // Police found Dh750,000 worth of pure heroin in a taxi, officers said today.

Officers seized 10kg of the drug and arrested DA, a 38-year-old from an unspecified African country, on April 4 following a tip off.

They named their operation 'Coral' after the stamp that featured on packets of the drug.

"We received reliable information about the activity of a person who was about to receive some drugs so we immediately started our investigations," said Major General Abdul Al Jaleel Al Mahdi, head of the anti-narcotic department at Dubai Police.

The tip off suggested a man would be collecting the drugs in Al Baraha, but police tracked him to Al Mamzar where they arrested him and found bags of the drug in the back seat of the taxi.

Maj Gen Al Mahdi said police did not know where the drugs had come from, but they could have been produced in the UAE.

"The drugs were not aimed at local distribution but most probably he wanted to smuggle it outside the country," he added.

The case has been referred to the public prosecution.
