Deportation for vice offence
ABU DHABI // An Etihad Airways flight attendant was fined Dh1,000 (US$270) yesterday and ordered to be deported for homosexual activity. According to the police, officers saw TE, a Malaysian national who worked as a flight attendant for the carrier, engaging in homosexual activity with a taxi driver about one month ago. Both were arrested and immediately jailed.
A Court of Misdemeanours judge ordered TE be deported after hearing he had been drunk on the night of the incident. TE's defence lawyer said that alcohol should not be a factor because his client, a Buddhist, was allowed to drink. The lawyer said he would appeal against the sentence to try to have the deportation order overturned. The taxi driver's case has not yet been heard, and he remains in jail.
