Delivery man in Dubai denies molesting woman in lift

MA, Yemeni, aged 23, told the Dubai Criminal Court that he did not touch the woman’s shoulders as she claims nor did he try to hold her hand.

DUBAI // A man denied molesting a woman in a lift while he was delivering an order to a flat in her building, a court heard.

MA, Yemeni, 23, told the Dubai Criminal Court that he did not touch the woman’s shoulders as she claims nor did he try to hold her hand. “I was trying to press the button to the floor number I’m heading to and touched her hand by mistake,” said MA.

“I apologised immediately but she didn’t accept and the next day when I was walking near the same building she was with her husband, she pointed at me and her husband assaulted me, police came to find me unconscious,” said MA.

Prosecutors charged the man with sexual assault.

The Uzbek victim said in records that on May 5 at around noon she was heading home after her shift finished. “I took the lift and it was then when the defendant jumped inside, he pressed the button and when the door closed he touched me” she said, adding that she screamed at him and pushed him away before she jumped out of the lift.

She called her husband and informed him. “The next day my husband and I were in the lift when the defendant jumped in. I told my husband it was the same guy so he asked him why had he done so,” said the woman.

“He told me he was sorry but I called police anyway,” said the woman’s husband, AR.

A verdict is expected on November 10.
