DUBAI // A female visitor denied trying to smuggle more than two kilograms of heroin into the country, a Dubai court heard this morning.

The defendant, MM, 30, from South Africa, told the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance she did not know what was in the bag that contained the drugs because her friend had given it to her and asked her to deliver it to his brother in Dubai.

Prosecutors said MM entered Dubai International Airport on July 24, 2010, and was found carrying 2.7kg of heroin in one of her two bags.

AH, a corporal testified that MM acted suspicious when she was being searched, and that there was an abnormal thickness in MM’s bag.

She said that when she pierced the bag, she found the banned narcotic.

AA, an anti-narcotics corporal at the Dubai police, testified that the defendant was coming from Hyderabad and arrived after midnight.

"She seemed tense and scared when she arrived,” he told prosecutors.

The court will issue its verdict on March 22.
