Woman convicted of Carrefour theft

She tells judge she had forgotten to pay for the items she was accused of trying to steal.

DUBAI // A 25-year-old woman was sentenced to a month in prison for stealing clothes and shoes from the Deira City Center Carrefour this morning, despite her pleas that she had simply forgotten to pay.

The Filipina woman, MK, was charged at the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours with attempted theft in April.

MK said that on April 2, she had stashed several articles of clothing and a pair of shoes in her bags. But, she added, she did not intend to steal them.

“I am not guilty, your honour, I forgot to pay for them,” she told Judge Ibrahim Khalil Abu Shamma. “I want mercy, your honour, please do not deport me, I have new job and many responsibilities."
Prosecutors said that the incident was captured on cameras. They said she hid the items in bags she brought with her into the hypermarket that were stapled by the security guards.
