ABU DHABI // A doctor accused of beating his pregnant wife told the Appeals Court today that she had made the accusation up.
The doctor, an Emirati, said his wife made the allegation to police following a visit to his office in which she screamed at him and made a scene.
He then decided to divorce her, citing the damage she had done to his career and reputation.
The wife then withdrew her complaint and begged him not to go through with the divorce. She told social workers hormonal changes were responsible for her earlier rage.
But the doctor decided to proceed with the divorce anyway. When the wife learnt of his intention, she went back to the police and asked to reinstate her allegation of assault.
A verdict is expected on September 27.
