DUBAI // A man who stabbed his brother's friend in an attack so vicious his guts spilt out of his abdomen has been sentenced to a year in prison.

KO, 22, an Emirati, stabbed MY, a stateless 20-year-old, in the head, back, shoulder, leg and stomach in a frenzied attack after the man mistakenly brushed hands with one of his friends while they were travelling in the back of a car together.

One of the cuts to the stateless man's stomach was so severe it left a 17cm-opening through which his guts spilt out, heard the Criminal Court.

On September 10, 2011, a group of men were travelling from Al Muhaisnah to Nad Al Hamar in the car of the Emirati's brother when a fight broke out.

The stateless man recalled that seconds before the attack he had mistakenly brushed hands with one of the other men in the car who was sitting next to him on the back seat.

"I apologised to him but [the Emirati] didn't take the apology and started screaming at me before he asked his brother to stop the car," recalled the stateless man.

The Emirati then dragged him from the car and stabbed him repeatedly.

Two of the other men in the car took the stateless man to hospital.

When the Emirati was arrested police found he had hidden the knife in his underwear.

He was convicted of attempted murder.
