ABU DHABI // The South African professor Cyril Karabus has been paid back his Dh100,000 bail money, further clearing the way for his return home, his lawyer said today.

The doctor remains in the UAE while he waits for the Interior Ministry to return his passport following his acquittal on manslaughter charges.

The 78 year old was charged over the death of a three year old cancer patient. Prosecutors claimed he failed to give her a vital blood transfusion and forged a report to make it look as if he had given the treatment.

He was acquitted by both the Criminal Court and the Appeals Court, after which public prosecutors agreed to drop the case.
