Two took Dh190,000 in carpet shop robbery, court hears

One man hid inside the store while the other provided safe-cracking equipment, prosecutors said.

DUBAI // Two unemployed men broke into a carpet shop in an Al Muraqqabat shopping center and stole Dh190,000 from its safe, a Dubai court heard this morning.

JQ, 28, from Iraq, and EA, 46, Iranian, denied the charges before the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance.

According to records, the two men watched the shop from a public park opposite the center for a week before carrying out the theft on October 5, 2007.

Prosecutors said JQ entered the Lulu Hypermarket Center shortly before closing, armed with a screwdriver, mask, and gloves. He hid behind a carpet while EA waited for him outside.

He remained behind the carpet until 3am, records show, then contacted his accomplice for an electric saw to force open a safe inside the shop.

JQ took about an hour to force open the safe, from which he took Dh190,000, records show. He then left his gear and fled the store.

The two were arrested in 2010 and confessed during prosecution investigations, records show. A forensic report found traces of EA's DNA on the gear and the clothes.
The two face separate charges of stealing nearly Dh4 million from an exchange center in Dubai. They were arrested while trying to flee to Iran, Dubai Police said last year.

A verdict is expected on April 12.
