Two men were caught attempting to smuggle more than 7kg of crystal meth from Dubai to Bahrain, the emirate's criminal court heard on Sunday.

Police were tipped off about the Bahraini men, aged 20 and 27, when they entered Dubai from their home country in February.

Police tracked them to a flat in Dubai Production City, where it was alleged the men were packing the drugs into a suitcase. Police raided the flat on February 11 and arrested the pair.

“One of them was standing while the other was seated in front of a table with 16 plastic bags that contained crystal meth,” said a policeman.

Investigations revealed the men already smuggled drugs to Bahrain from Dubai in December. They received 7.4kg of crystal meth from a man in Naif and hid half of it in the false ceiling of a flat in Jumeirah that they rented specifically to store the drugs.

The pair told police they were planning to smuggle the rest of the drugs to their home country by wrapping packets of crystal meth around their bodies using bandages - as they had previously done.

“They said a man in Bahrain sent them here to carry the drugs back to Bahrain,” said the policeman.

At Dubai Criminal Court on Sunday, the two denied possessing drugs to sell.

“I didn’t know about the drugs," said the younger accused. "I came here to buy car spare parts and when I knew about the drugs. I was threatened with death if I told anyone,”

The next hearing is scheduled for November 8.
