DUBAI // Two men who attacked a father and his 14-year-old son outside a supermarket, were today sentenced to jail.

The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance sentenced HJ, 31, to three years in prison and his accomplice MY, 19, to one year. It referred a third defendant to the Juvenile Court for trial.

The two men attacked the Bahraini national MA, 46, and his son BM outside a supermarket in Abu Hail on the evening of February 26.

The boy and his father had been returning from a trip to buy bread when they stopped at the supermarket to pick up some juice.

The father waited in the car while his son went in to the shop. A short time passed before the father noticed an Indian man waving at him, and warning him that three men were assaulting his son.

"When I tried to break up the fight two of the men attacked me from behind with sharp tools and hit me on the back of my head," the father told prosecutors. He said that when he fell to the ground, the men continued their assault.

The father fell into a coma following the attack, waking up later in hospital.

A medical report said that the attack had caused him to lose feeling in two of the toes on his right foot, as well as the ability to bend them. It described the injury as a five per cent permanent disability in his foot.

The report also noted that the son sustained injuries in the face, upper limps and back during the attack.
