An American traveller caught with postage stamps and chocolate bars laced with drugs said he needed them to cope with anxiety and depression, a court heard.

The investor, 33, was arrested at Dubai International Airport on July 4 after customs officers discovered his stash of illegal substances.

The man was carrying 11 pods filled with cannabidiol oil, 17 marijuana cigarettes, a number of chocolate bars mixed with marijuana and 98 stamps covered in the hallucinogenic drug LSD in his luggage.

During police questioning, he said the drugs were for his own personal use.

Appearing before Dubai Criminal Court, he said the substances were prescribed by his doctor to treat his mental health problems, but was unable to provide any documentation as evidence.

Prosecutors told the court the number of drugs in his possession was too great to be for his own use.

He was charged with possessing and smuggling illegal substances.

The case was adjourned until October 6, when a verdict is expected to be passed.
