DUBAI // A 37-year-old tourist was arrested after airport customs officials found his clothes had been soaked with liquid cocaine.

The Dubai Criminal Court heard on Tuesday morning that Australian CA smuggled more than three kilograms of the drug on February 17.

Customs inspector RA, 23, testified that the defendant arrived at the airport from Argentina.

“We suspected him and the bag he was carrying,” said RA. “I had his bag scanned through X-ray and found that nine pieces of his clothes had been soaked with drugs.

“When we asked him about the clothes, he said that he did not know and that his friend in Argentina had given him the bag to deliver to his girlfriend in Australia.”

The defendant was then referred to Dubai Police’s Anti-Narcotics Department, where the drugs were weighed at 3.37kg.

He denied a charge of smuggling cocaine, saying: “I didn’t know the clothes contained drugs.”

A verdict is due on June 15.
