A man who screamed blasphemous insults at his former workplace was sentenced to three months and prison and fined Dh500,000.
On July 23, the Moroccan defendant, 36, stormed into an office in Al Rashidiya, where he used to work, and demanded to see his former boss.
Three staff members told him they did not know where he was, but the accused would not believe them.
"He became furious and started insulting our honour using very bad language. Then he started cursing God," said a Syrian employee.
The three witnesses reported the man to police the same day.
Police arrested the man and Dubai Criminal Court charged him with blasphemy.
He denied the charge saying, “I swear in the name of God I never blasphemed. I am a Muslim.”
On Monday, the court convicted him of blasphemy and sentenced him to three months in prison followed by deportation. He was also fined half a million dirhams.
