A former employee of a UAE telecoms company has been charged with stealing Dh1.4m of smartphones and SIM cards.

Dubai Criminal Court heard that the Pakistani defendant, 31, stole 496 items between January 2014 and September 2015.

The theft was discovered after an internal audit that revealed many customers had failed to keep up with repayment instalments after buying mobile phones.

Officials realised the customer details were fake and had been created by the female employee to mask her crimes.

“When the matter was investigated internally we discovered that all unpaid purchases were made through her account,” an audit manager told the court.

Appearing in court on Sunday, the woman denied charges of theft and fraud.

The hearing was adjourned until March 1.
