DUBAI // A teacher forged her marriage contract to get a better divorce settlement, a court heard yesterday.

The Yemeni, 28, is accused of changing the dowry amount from 100,000 to 500,000 Yemeni riyals.

She submitted the document to Dubai Sharia Court as part of her divorce hearing but her husband, 39, also from Yemen, noticed the discrepancy and reported her.

Prosecutors said the woman married in 1999 but tampered with the contract in 2011 before filing for divorce.

A forensic exam found a "chemical substance" had been used to delete the original dowry.

The examiner also noted that the 500,000 had not been written in words at the end of the contract, as it should have been.

The woman denied forgery and using a forged contract at the Criminal Court yesterday.

"I got married when I was 14 your honour, the agreements were made between my father and my husband, I have no idea what amounts for the dowry they agreed on or wrote down in the contract," she said.

The next hearing was scheduled for September 30.
