DUBAI // A taxi driver grabbed a passenger as she left his cab and tried to kiss her, a court heard yesterday.

The Pakistani S?K, 30, picked up the woman in Sharjah and drove to her home in Dubai on July 2, prosecutors said.

When they arrived the driver grabbed her by the hand and pulled her to him, the court was told.

The woman said she pushed him away but he persisted and leant in for a kiss, holding her close to his chest.

She wriggled out of his grasp and reported him to police, the court heard.

H?A, 27, an Emirati policeman, said the driver denied her story.

“He told me the woman was under the influence of alcohol when I interrogated him,” the policeman said.

The driver told him that when they arrived at the woman’s home in Jebel Ali she asked him for a cigarette. “The two smoked behind the car and he told me that when they finished, he hugged her goodbye and left in peace without any trouble,” said the policeman.

The driver was charged with sexual assault. He did not appear at the Criminal Court to enter a plea.

The next hearing was scheduled for November 18.
