Student sentenced in Dubai for dangerous driving and crashing into police cars

A student was sentenced to six months in jail for endangering the lives of police officers, resisting arrest and assaulting an officer after a 20-minute car chase.
The 21-year-old Emirati ignored police patrols that warned him against reckless driving at about 4am on June 12 following complaints from residents in the Al Warqaa area.
"The operations room received a report about him and had sent police patrols to his location, then we received a call for back up and responded to it," an Emirati police officer told the Dubai Criminal Court.
Police gave chase in a  residential area where the man drove at 100kmph in a zone with a 40kmh limit, the court heard.
When police attempted to stop him,  he drove towards them at high speed and hit the brakes when  he was few meters away causing his vehicle to crash into police cars and slam one patrol car with an officer inside into a cement road barrier.
The officer told the court that he was assaulted when he tried to arrest the student who then smashed his car window.
"I opened the driver's door but he shut it and grabbed my arm, then he reached out for  a hammer on the passenger's seat to hit me with it but I managed to free my arm," said the officer, who suffered injuries from the crash and the broken window.
The driver was arrested by several officers who surrounded the car.
