DUBAI // A student tried to run over two traffic policemen who caught him driving on two wheels, a court has heard.

The officers were on patrol in Al Warqa on August 29, 2011, when they noticed S?A, 20, an Emirati, covering the licence plate on his white Land Cruiser with duct tape.

He then got into the 4x4 and sped off, performing a stunt in which the vehicle went on to its two side wheels.

When the two officers tried to flag down the car, the student swerved towards them, nearly hitting them.

“We also saw him speeding and suddenly swerving towards other cars in a very dangerous manner,” recalled the officer.

The officers got into their vehicle and pursued him briefly before the student got stuck in a patch of sand. He jumped out of his car and started running but police caught him. Two other men escaped.

The student denied trying to ram the police patrol.

“I drove recklessly but I didn’t swerve towards any car and definitely not the police patrol and I didn’t try to hit the officers,” he said.

The Misdemeanours Court found him guilty on a charge of posing risk to the life of a policeman and fined him Dh10,000.
