DUBAI // A student was arrested after presenting border guards with his friend's identity card - not knowing his friend was wanted by police, a court heard today.

AR, 19, an Emirati, was arrested at the Hatta border on January 5 after returning from a three-day trip to Oman. Police informed him he was wanted in relation to a case of damaging others' property, but he told them he was using his friend's ID card. He said he had also used it to exit the country three days earlier.

"He told us that his passport had expired and was at the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency department so he used his friend's ID to travel to Oman," recalled MS, a policeman.

The student was charged with impersonation and with using an official document not belonging to him.

He denied the impersonation charge but confessed to using the ID.

The judge ordered him to provide the court with his birth certificate.

The case was adjourned to April 18.
