Six-month sentence for bump-grab robbery

Man stole Dh60,000 from a pedestrian, prosecutors said.

DUBAI // A man was convicted this morning of stealing Dh60,138 from a passerby and sentenced to six months in prison by the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance.

SB, 27, from Ethiopia, was charged with forcible theft in a public place. He denied the charges.

According to records, SB attacked MS, an Iranian, from behind, kicked him in the leg and grabbed the money from the man’s pocket. He then gave the cash to a second man, who was not identified in records. That man remains at large.

MS testified the attack occurred at 10am on December 12, 2010, in the Naif area as he returned from a business deal with Sour Al Madina Fabric Corporation.

Three Criminal Investigation officers in the area in civilian clothes heard him yelling after the robbery and chased down SB.

SB will be deported after serving his prison term.
