Salary thief seeks shorter sentence

A construction company administrator has admitted he embezzled more than Dh1 million in workers' salaries and transferred them abroad.

DUBAI // A construction company administrator has admitted he embezzled more than Dh1 million in workers' salaries and transferred them abroad. RI, 31, from India, had filed an appeal after being convicted of breach of trust at the Dubai Court of Misdemeanors on June 15 and sentenced to six months in prison for stealing US$278,458 (Dh1.03m). While RI yesterday conceded that he was guilty of the crime, he told the court that he has since repaid 60 per cent of the stolen money and asked that his sentence be commuted since he was refused bail after the lower court's verdict in June. He presented the court with documents showing the repayments he has made, worth more than Dh600,000.

According to prosecution records, investigators were alerted to the theft on March 15 last year. On April 22, RI was charged with breach of trust in the Dubai Court of Misdemeanors. He had been given the money in cash and asked to deposit it into employee accounts but it never materialised. RI was arrested and detained at the Bur Dubai Police Station on April 9. Investigation records show that he confessed the embezzlement to police.

After his arrest, investigators found that the defendant had transferred all the funds to his home country by making wire transfers in large amounts. Presiding Judge Adnan al Farra is to issue his verdict on August 8, and RI has been remanded into custody. amustafa@thenational.ae
