'Raped' woman jailed for prostitution
DUBAI // A Kyrgyzstani woman who claimed she was raped was convicted of prostitution and filing a false police report at the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours yesterday. The man accused of attacking her, a Palestinian security guard, saw his assault charges referred to a misdemeanours court after the court heard that forensic tests proved the woman, EA, 35, was not raped. She was sentenced to serve one year in the Dubai Central Prison and will face more charges over allegations of assault and illegal consumption of alcohol.
EA filed a police complaint at Deira's Al Murragabat police station against the Palestinian man, RD, after a heated argument on December 26 last year. She told police the man kidnapped her, physically assaulted her, raped her and threatened her life. Police had her undergo a forensic examination and that showed no evidence of rape or sexual violence. However, the report said there was conclusive evidence she was sexually active. Under questioning by prosecutors, she admitted to being a prostitute. The security guard was charged with assault after the forensic tests showed the woman had been scratched and bitten.
EA has two weeks to appeal against the sentence. firstname.lastname@example.org
