Prisoner who made fire threats gets more jail time
DUBAI // A prisoner who threatened to set fire to the detention centre of the Ports Police Station was today sentenced to three months in prison.
The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance also ordered the Emirati KJ, 25, to pay Dh2,900 for damages he caused to the light bulbs in his solitary confinement cell.
He made the threat while being detained at the station on September 23 last year, demanding that officers provide him with the drugs he needed for an undisclosed medical condition.
He admitted making the threat, but denied causing any damage.
The 27-year-old policeman NA said he visited the prisoner in his solitary confinement cell. "When I went to him he threatened to set fire to the detention centre," said the policeman. "I opened the door to see him breaking the light bulbs," he added.
Riot police were brought in to control him as he was carrying a metal bar. It was unclear how he managed to get the metal bar. The reason for the man's original incarceration was also not mentioned.
