DUBAI // A prison guard who accepted a bribe in return for smuggling drugs to an inmate was today sentenced to a year in jail and fined Dh3,700.

The 26-year-old Emirati TA, a guard at the Dubai Central Jail, smuggled the drugs to ES, who was in solitary confinement, in July 2009. The guard received a Dh2,000 payment up front and a further Dh1,700 after the delivery.

The inmate, a 28-year-old Emirati, was convicted of offering a bribe and was sentenced to a year in prison.

SA, a 27-year-old Pakistani who supplied the drugs to the prison guard, was also sentenced to a year in prison and will be deported following his sentence.

A Dubai Police major in the anti-narcotics department said that the prison guard's stretched personal finances tempted him to take the bribe.

The type of drug was not disclosed.
