DUBAI // A man and his pregnant girlfriend have been sentenced to three months in prison for assaulting each other after she angrily confronted him at his workplace.

The Dubai Court of Misdemeanours was told PY, 36, from China, kicked his girlfriend, HL, in the stomach.

The court heard HL, also 36 and from China, went to the car spare-parts company where PY was a manager and attacked him because he refused to marry her or admit he was responsible for her pregnancy.

The two were also charged with having consensual sex and HL was charged with becoming pregnant outside of marriage.

PY said he did not assault HL and denied that he had refused to marry her or admit he was the father.

He said he had known HL for about two years and they often had sex at her flat in the Chinese Cluster of International City, where he lived with her for about six months.

PY said he knew she had become pregnant late last November and he wanted to marry her.

"We were in love and thinking of marriage," he testified.

PY told prosecutors that about 1.30pm last April 8, LH, who was then five months pregnant, arrived in a fury at his workplace in Al Naif area. He said she started slapping his face and kicking him.

"I tried to defend myself so I just restrained her," he said, adding several people saw her assaulting him.

HL was taken to hospital and a medical report stated she suffered pain in her lower abdomen and scratches on her arms.

The two were each fined Dh1,000 on the charges of consensual sex.
