A traveller caught with a cocktail of cocaine, cannabis and painkillers at Dubai International Airport has appeared in court.

The American accused admitted carrying the drugs, but told judges they were for his own personal use.

The 42-year-old - who was catching a connecting flight from the airport - was arrested on September 4 when custom officials discovered the haul during a luggage search.

He was found to be in possession of 37 e-cigarette filters filled with cannabidiol, also known as CBD oil, 147 pieces of candy mixed with cannabis, another 528 grams of cannabis, 19 painkiller tablets and 1.1 grams of cocaine powder.

During a hearing at Dubai Criminal Court on Wednesday, the defendant argued that he wasn't bringing the drugs into the country as he only in the UAE as a transit passenger.

It was not disclosed in court which country the man had flown in from or where his final destination was to be.

A verdict is expected on December 22.
