Overweight luggage bribes alleged in court

Pakistani airline worker caught on camera taking money to allow overweight bags on flight under different passengers' names.

DUBAI // A Pakistani International Airlines customer service officer was accused of taking bribes from two passengers in exchange for placing their overweight baggage on a flight, a court heard this morning.

The suspect RH, 58, failed to appear before the Dubai Court of First Instance. Court records stated authorities had been tipped off and put him under surveillance for days before he was caught placing luggage onboard for people not on the flight, using the names of passengers without heavy checked bags.

Records showed that cameras caught him taking Dh1,000 from a female passenger on August 31, 2010, last year in return for shipping her luggage, which would have required Dh2,500 in airline fees.

He was also recorded taking Dh300 from a Pakistani man who was not among the passengers on a flight to Pakistan, records showed, adding that both the man and woman from the recordings were charged with offering bribes.

All have denied the charges. The next hearing will be in February.
