DUBAI // A man arrested for consuming drugs after his girlfriend died of an overdose during a stay at a Dubai hotel has been sentenced to four years in prison.
SM, 22, an Emirati, was referred to the Dubai Criminal Court on charges of consuming drugs after he stood a separate trial at the Misdemeanours Court on charges of having consensual sex with his girlfriend Teeb Ebrahim, also 22, who died on August 27 last year while staying at the Beach Hotel Apartments in Jumeirah 1.
SM has already been sentenced to three months in jail on the consensual sex charge.
The criminal court was told SM was high on hashish at the time of Ms Teeb's death. He denied the drugs charge earlier this month.
His girlfriend's post mortem revealed cause of death to be an overdose of a number of drugs, including Tramadol.
SM told prosecutors they would often book into a hotel room so they could have sex, drink alcohol and go to bars and dance clubs together, but said on the night of Ms Ebrahim's death they had only watched TV before going to sleep.
He said she fell in the bathroom the night before, which left her with a number of injuries noted in the post mortem. He said he noticed her taking some medicine the same day.
When he woke the next morning she was on the floor breathing heavily, but lost consciousness by the time rescue services arrived. Medics tried to revive her for 40 minutes but were unsuccessful.
